Waiting for boarding and turning the unused portion of my boarding pass into paper cranes. It’s relaxing.

Attempt at one bag packing. All this is 25lbs?! Must condense!

In preparation of my upcoming trip, I’ve taken an idea from the ladies at Academic Chic and have created a packing list matrix. While I would love to be able to be as fashionable as those academic ladies, the practical voice in me is saying, “You’re going to work not a fashion show.” :-(
It’s true that the area I’m headed to isn’t the five star luxury travel destination. The showroom will most likely be under renovation, which in the past has included a lot of tearing down and ripping up of flooring, walls, and even roofing. It’s not exactly the place to be strutting around in delicate clothing or high heels (how the factory gals manage to walk on those ice-pick called heels is beyond me). My goal is to be comfortable. There will be a lot of long hours and so for me, that translates to the basics: jeans, a t-shirt, and some sturdy multi-functional (dress up/dress down) boots.
A review of my itinerary shows that I’m only going to be away for a total of 9 days, which is broken down as 3 days travel + 6 days work. The 3 travel days will mean one outfit, and of the 6 days work, 1 involves more formal business attire. So that’s 2 outfits right there for 4 days. So I’m basically left with 5 days of casual/comfy dress. I’ve narrowed these 5 days down to 2 pairs of jeans + 4 tops and just swapping the jeans out.
The full packing list matrix.
I know there’s still a lot of stuff listed. I limited myself to only five items from each category and I kept editing some areas down but then adding to other areas. I have yet to do a trial run of packing with all the items listed so that’s up next!

Imago outside the Federal Building, Los Angeles
Since the Imago has become my everyday carry bag, it accompanied me to the Federal Building when I went to renew my passport. A funny thing happened as I went through the security check to get into the building. There are 2 or 3 agents that do the screening for a long line of people and so the screening is strict and more thorough than at LAX. In my rush to leave for the early morning drive (50+ miles to get to a 07:00 appointment), I didn’t empty out the contents of the bag.
So when it came turn for me to go through security, I started emptying out the bag for all electronic items as requested. After I went through the metal detector, the gentleman scanning my bag asked me if I had something else inside my bag that perhaps I didn’t take out because he kept seeing something appear on the screen. Puzzled, I proceeded to empty my bag some more, after which I came upon an external hard drive which I had forgotten I placed in my bag!
After taking a survey of the contents, the other security guards now all approached the table where I was—oops—holding up the line. They paused to examine my belongings before one finally asked: “How is it that you are able to fit everything into that bag?”
I smiled and said that Tom Bihn bags are magical and proceeded to put all my things back inside the bag.

Azalea on Flickr.
More TB gear arrived, yay! Included is a small organizer pouch in one of their latest new colors - Azalea. I’m not sure I captured the shade very well since it’s just so vivid. W-O-W.
My current dilemma: switching over to the Synapse since I’ve been using the Imago. I ordered the Synapse in Steel Dyneema and find myself hemming and hawing over the switch from Cordura to Dyneema materials. I’ll get around to testing everything out soon.

So I’m catching up on my emails after some domestic travel and I came across an email notification alert from UPS. I couldn’t recall ordering anything recently (Amazon, eBay and Ulta all checked as nos) so I was rather puzzled at why I was being notified of a parcel due for delivery on 04-Oct-2011. Upon further reading, I came across the words TOM BIHN and realized—my backordered items have shipped!
Happy dance.
The Imago went from travel bag to hiking bag!
Post trip edit: I took out the cache and my laptop. The clear organizer pouch remained, and I added as follows:
- Medium sized organizer pouch - sunscreen, hand sanitizer (4oz) and some moist towelettes.
- Small sized organizer pouch - band-aids, alcohol swabs and antibiotic ointment (I’m a bit of a klutz in the Great Outdoors.)
- Brita filtering water bottle
- Cardigan and scarf
- Sandwich (picked up from T & S, with thanks.)
